CHRISTMAS IN MILAN – EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC
In Milan, Christmas begins on 7 December, the feast day of Sant’Ambrogio, the city’s patron saint. It marks the start of the festive season with one of the year’s most anticipated cultural events – the Prima della Scala, the grand opening of the opera season at La Scala. A celebration of art, music and elegance, it perfectly captures the refined spirit of Milan.
MARKETS, LIGHTS AND FESTIVE CHARM
Throughout December, the city glows with markets, lights and traditions that blend history with contemporary Milanese flair. Here are some of the highlights:
Oh Bej! Oh Bej! // Villaggio delle Meraviglie
Oh Bej! Oh Bej! – (5th – 8th December) – The city’s oldest Christmas market near Castello Sforzesco, filled with crafts, sweets and local charm.
Villaggio delle Meraviglie – (15th November – 6th January) – A festive wonderland in the Giardini Indro Montanelli, featuring an ice rink, street food and joyful family fun.
Mercatino di Natale in Piazza Duomo // Artigianato in Fiera
Mercatino di Natale in Piazza Duomo – (1st December – 6th January) – Wooden chalets and artisan stalls set against the splendour of the cathedral.
Artigianato in Fiera – (1st – 8th December) – Thousands of exhibitors at Rho Fiera present handmade treasures and flavours from around the world.
Mercatini di Natale Francesi – (until 6th January) – A Parisian touch in Piazza Gae Aulenti, with gourmet delights and elegant décor.
THE TASTE OF TRADITION – PANETTONE
No Milanese Christmas is complete without Panettone, the city’s most famous festive delicacy.
Legend has it that in the 15th century, a young kitchen apprentice named Toni saved a banquet dessert gone wrong by serving his own creation. Toni offered a humble loaf he had prepared for the kitchen staff – a simple dough made of flour, eggs, butter, sugar, yeast, and raisins and candied fruit he had “borrowed” from the royal pantry. The simple “Pan de Toni” delighted the court so much that it became known as Panettone – a dessert destined to become a symbol of Milan.
Today, Panettone continues to bring warmth and sweetness to the festive season – a true taste of tradition that embodies the creativity, elegance and generosity of Milan.
