Inspired by blooming flowers and plants reawakening after winter, Susan created a series of hyper-folded, origami-style paper sculptures using Coloursource paper. Each piece was built by hand in a single colour, then photographed against self-coloured and contrasting backdrops to explore how light, tone and shadow shift within the same shade.

Susan’s work is both process-led and playful. For Coloursource, Susan developed the concept around organic, floral structures, shapes that feel like flowers blooming, plants reawakening, or leaves curling back to the light of spring.

As with any design project, Susan began each sculpture with research, sketching and model-making. Susan also visited the James Cropper mill in the Lake District to create her own Coloursource paper, bringing the material’s origins directly into her creative process. The result is a series of forms that feel precise yet alive, all controlled, but never rigid.

By pairing each sculpture with both matching and contrasting backgrounds, Susan pushed the spring palette further – from tone-on-tone calm to bolder, high-contrast pairings. Throughout, the paper remains the focus: edges stay clean, colours stay rich, and the forms feel as if they could keep growing beyond the frame.

As part of the Coloursource launch, Winter & Company invited independent British screenprinter and graphic artist Dan Mather to translate these sculptural forms into print. With over two decades of experience producing hand-pulled limited edition prints, Dan is known for his detailed, water-based silkscreen work from his studio in Yorkshire.

Dan has produced a limited-edition series of A2 Coloursource posters in single-colour metallic ink on two spring-forward shades from the range – Bright Yellow CLN350 and Vibrant Green CLN342. Designed by D8 Studio, the posters feature illustrations of Susan’s paper sculptures, capturing their organic lines in strong, graphic silhouettes.
